What the Bible Actually Says About Divorce and Remarriage
Divorce and remarriage are among the most difficult and sensitive subjects discussed in the Bible. Christians often have different opinions about whether divorce is ever permitted, whether a divorced person can marry again, and what Jesus meant when He spoke about marriage and separation.
To understand the subject properly, it is important to look at what the Bible actually says rather than relying only on traditions, personal opinions, or what people have heard from others.
What Was God’s Original Plan for Marriage?
From the beginning, the Bible presents marriage as a serious and lasting covenant.
In Genesis 2:24, Scripture says that a man will leave his father and mother, be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. Jesus later referred to this passage when teaching about divorce.
In Matthew 19:4–6, Jesus said:
“What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”
