The attacker, reportedly a young worshipper, stabbed the cleric twice in the neck before other worshippers overpowered and killed him. The incident was linked to a previous sermon considered offensive by some scholars.

The cleric had reportedly submitted a complaint to the Sokoto State Government four days before the attack over threats to his life. Police said Lukwa is receiving treatment and responding well.
