Dozens of footballers on the pitch and thousands of spectators were left traumatised after witnessing the tragic death of a young, gifted player who collapsed during a live match.
Miklos Feher, a 24-year-old Hungarian striker playing for Benfica, died on the pitch in 2004 during his side’s rain-soaked fixture against Vitoria Guimaraes. The forward entered the game in the 60th minute and just minutes later set up Fernando Aguiar for what would prove to be the match’s only goal.
Moments before the televised encounter was set to end, in the 91st minute, referee Olegario Benquerença showed Miklos a yellow card for time-wasting.
