Former Liberian President Weah Says Wife’s Insistence to Stay in Rehab Spared Family From Fire

According to a report by AllAfrica on Monday, September 29, 2025, former Liberian President George Weah has recounted a narrow escape from a devastating fire that gutted his residence on 9th Street in Monrovia. Speaking at a church in Paynesville on Sunday, September 28, 2025, Weah revealed that his wife had forewarned the family not to spend the night in their 9th Street home, insisting they instead stay at their residence in Rehab. This decision reportedly spared the family from harm when flames broke out in the early hours of that morning.

Weah described how, upon arriving home from a legislative session, his wife firmly declared that they would sleep at the Rehab house despite his initial hesitation. Shortly thereafter, news came through that their 9th Street property was ablaze. The fire, which began in Weah’s bedroom, was brought under control by the Liberia National Fire Service by 2:03 a.m. No injuries were reported. The Liberia National Fire Service suggested that an electrical fluctuation might have triggered the fire, although a planned forensic investigation did not proceed, leaving the fire’s cause officially unconfirmed.

The incident has taken on political dimensions, as Weah’s party, the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), suggested the fire was deliberate and called for an independent international investigation. The party also accused supporters of the ruling party of circulating misleading photos showing damage to the former president’s bedroom. Weah emphasised spiritual resilience, urging followers to focus on faith rather than material loss, framing the event as divine protection for his family.
