Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, she explained that not having a father figure was confusing and shaped how she viewed other men, from friends to romantic partners. Her father was supposed to be the “bar” or standard, and his absence left a void.

Reconciling with him was a “big shift” that finally allowed her to “breathe” and see men differently. This healing gave her the confidence she needed to pursue her solo career and become the artist she is today.

Seyi Shay said: “My dad wasn’t really a part of my life until I got much older, until about maybe just over 12 years ago now. I reached out to him. I was finally I could breathe because I had spoken to him. I finally learned how to see men differently as well because the father figure in a girl’s life is so important because it kind of shapes how you see men, you know, other men from friends, boyfriends, husband. Your father is supposed to be the bar, right? And me not having that reference point really confused me a lot. So when I finally kind of reconciled with my dad, it was a big shift for me. And it actually helped me when I embarked on this mission to become Seyi Shay because it released me.”
