Pro-Wike Lawmakers Vow Not To Attend Functions With Fubara Until He Distances Himself From 4 People

According to The Punch, a thanksgiving service was held at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Garrison, in Port Harcourt. Governor Fubara attended with some of his associates and a few supporters. He read a Bible passage during the service but did not give a speech. By the time the news was reported, his media team had not released any official statement.

Fubara and the state lawmakers had only just resumed work on September 18 after being suspended for six months by President Bola Tinubu on March 18.

The suspension followed a state of emergency declared in Rivers State because of the political conflict between Fubara and his former mentor, Nyesom Wike. Shortly before the emergency period ended, both men claimed they had reconciled.

On the same day, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, a Wike loyalist, celebrated his 52nd birthday with a thanksgiving service at the Anglican Church in Eliozu, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. The event also marked the church’s Annual Youth Harvest.

Meanwhile, none of the 23 local government chairmen—including those from the Peoples Democratic Party—attended Fubara’s thanksgiving service.

A source close to the lawmakers disclosed that, despite the public show of peace between the governor and Wike, the pro-Wike camp had allegedly decided to boycott public functions with Governor Fubara unless he dissociated himself from the three lawmakers loyal to him and from his Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, who was a former factional speaker.

The source added, “Beginning Monday, the Governor is expected to make some changes in action and in words to show he has truly reconciled with the FCT Minister.”
